Conservation and Restoration of Traditional Textiles

The Conservation and Restoration of Traditional Textiles program, established in 2015 within the Department of Handicrafts within the Technical Sciences Vocational School in Sultanhanı, is a part of the Department of Technical Sciences. Our department provides education in Sultanhanı. Three faculty members are actively involved in our teaching staff.

The program's purpose is to train personnel who are knowledgeable about the raw materials that make up traditional textiles, who are knowledgeable about weaving techniques, who can recognize and take precautions against deterioration, and who are knowledgeable about and able to apply the principles and techniques of preservation and restoration of traditional textiles. After receiving this training, they will be employed in ethnographic museums affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, privately owned museums, textile conservation and restoration laboratories, and private businesses that restore traditional textiles, particularly carpets.

Graduates of the GTKR program are expected to work as conservation (conservation) and restoration (repair) technicians to meet the need for intermediate personnel in the restoration departments of museums. It is also envisioned that graduates of the program will contribute to closing the gap in graduate-qualified personnel in the field.

Our primary goal as a program is to train technicians equipped with the necessary technical skills for conservation and restoration, who will protect our cultural heritage. In this context, students are provided with current and emerging practical information in the conservation and restoration of traditional textiles, one of our movable cultural assets. They are also provided with the knowledge and skills necessary for vocational training and field qualifications through workshops, laboratories, and course content.

The associate degree program aims to equip candidates with the fundamental knowledge and skills to work in museums, laboratories, and workshops related to the conservation and restoration of traditional textiles. Candidates utilize weaving workshops, natural dyeing workshops, museums, repair workshops located in the district, and computer labs to further develop their theoretical knowledge.

Completers of the associate degree program are eligible to receive an associate degree and a technician certificate in the Conservation and Restoration of Traditional Textiles Program. Graduates can work as technicians in ethnographic museums affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, textile conservation-restoration laboratories, and private workplaces that perform traditional textile restoration, especially carpets and flat weaves.
